Personal History Project

All of us have stories to tell. The Galeta Island Personal History Project is commited to collecting and honoring the stories of those who served there. Our lives are shaped by time and place. Our experiences reflect both history and place. Panama has a very special history with an amazing diverse environment.

Our experiences may be packed with emotional energy that scream the here and now, or they may slowly reveal a passive awareness. Some of us are great storytellers while others struggle to make sense of our experiences. There are all kinds of experiences, and all kinds of stories. All of our stories should be told!

We have family and friends that want to know our stories. People love stories. Our friends and families want to know those stories. People are curious about other people. There is a hunger for the emotional knowledge that is share in our stories.

Here are some reasons why your stories are important:

  • Stories teach without preaching.

We learn through other people’s experiences — how to survive, how to love, how to avoid danger, or what really matters.

Why? Stories offer low-risk ways to gain wisdom, especially about situations we haven’t faced ourselves.
  • We seek connection

Hearing someone’s story helps us feel less alone. It reminds us that others have faced pain, triumph, doubt, or transformation — just like we have.

Why? Humans are social creatures. Shared stories build empathy and community.
  • They Help Us Make Sense of Life

Life is chaotic. Stories bring order. They turn random events into meaningful sequences, often with causes, effects, and resolutions.

Why? Our brains are wired to look for patterns and meaning — stories satisfy that craving.
  • We Crave Identity and Belonging

Knowing others’ stories helps us define our own. We compare, contrast, and sometimes adopt parts of others’ journeys into our identity.

Why? We all want to know who we are — and how we fit into the bigger picture.
  • Stories Offer Escape and Perspective

They let us step outside our own reality and see the world through another lens — whether for entertainment or insight.

Why? Curiosity is a survival tool — but also a source of wonder
